GARRETT FISHER | PIANO & COMPOSITION INSTRUCTION

Garrett Fisher teaching piano in Seattle studio

Welcome to my piano and composition studio. I offer private lessons for children, teens, and adults, including in-home lessons, studio lessons, and online instruction.

I work with students and families seeking a thoughtful, long-term relationship with music. Each lesson is shaped around the individual student, balancing technical foundation with creativity and exploration. My goal is to help students build confidence, musical understanding, and independence — cultivating a lasting connection to making music.

With over 25 years of teaching experience, I work with piano students of all ages and levels, adapting lessons to each student’s goals and learning style. I teach classical, pop, and contemporary piano, and integrate music theory and composition for students who want to explore their own creative voice. Lessons are available in my home studio, in students’ homes, or via Zoom.

I studied piano, composition, and English at Oberlin Conservatory and College, and my music has received international recognition. You can learn more about my work as a composer here.

TESTIMONIALS

“Garrett has a wonderful ability to meet each child where they are — balancing structure and technique with creativity and fun, which keeps them engaged and motivated. He has nurtured not only their musical abilities but also their confidence and love of music. I’ve been particularly impressed by his patience, encouragement, and ability to adapt lessons to each child’s learning style. Whether they’re preparing for a recital or just exploring a new song, my boys always leave lessons feeling proud and inspired.”

“Although I took piano lessons when I was younger, I did not remember much about playing. Returning to lessons as an adult student was intimidating. Garrett was the perfect teacher for me. He arrived at our first lesson with sheet music for a current pop song, and within a few weeks I was on my way to playing recognizable tunes that were enjoyable to practice. Garrett understands that I play the piano for my own pleasure and consistently meets me where I am in my development. He is an encouraging and supportive teacher.”

— Sabrina Seward

“Learning to play the piano with Garrett has been a great experience for both me and my kids! His ability to work with both young and adult students demonstrates his understanding of a broad variety of teaching styles. He understands how to motivate his students through teaching technique, explaining theory, and choosing music that is relevant and fun to learn.”

— Ira Gerlich

“Garrett allows his students to take the wheel and own their learning experience. His tailored, student-driven approach makes it fun, enjoyable, and productive to learn to both compose and play music.”

—Gareth Widlansky

“Our daughter was interested in taking piano at the start of the pandemic. Garrett offered an easy and supportive way for her to begin her musical journey on Zoom. We are now going into our third year of lessons with Garrett. Our daughter looks forward to lessons and plays on her own. Thanks, Garrett!”

“You’ve imparted this love of music to my son… it’s so much deeper than just learning to play piano. He’s learning how to live musically.” –Vivian van Gelder

COMPOSITION INSTRUCTION

As a professional composer, my teaching extends beyond piano to composition—including songwriting, orchestration, and work for piano. I nurture confidence alongside technique to develop the student’s authentic and self-assured voice.

I’ve helped a student write a full musical (lyrics and music) and produce it at their high school. I’ve worked with a songwriter to create an EP — shaping songs, refining lyrics, and bringing it into the studio for multitrack recordings and accompanying videos.

Drawing on years of experience as a producer and collaborator, I help students move ideas toward realization. Through my connections in the performing arts, I make their education a living experience — supporting them as they bring their work into the world and learn through hands-on creative practice.

Forest Fire is an original song with music and lyrics written by my 11-year-old composition student, Tate Logan. I worked with him to develop the song and then produced it as a multitrack recording at a recording studio. I included Tate in the editing, mixing (including adding in electronic beats) and mastering, using the studio experience itself as a hands-on teaching tool.

PROFESSIONAL RECORDING

I also offer professional recording sessions for piano students, vocalists, and amateur musicians. Each performer records in a professional recording studio where I produce high-quality audio and video performances.

With over 25 years as a piano instructor and director of an internationally acclaimed ensemble, I know how to bring out authentic, expressive performances in every session. Drawing on my background in classical and popular music production — and my experience creating and editing performance videos for YouTube and social media — I craft recordings that showcase growth, share music with family and friends, and serve as polished portfolio pieces.
